Beach waves on shoulder length hair can be a trick to get it right.  Of course if your hair is long it is easy to put it around a curling iron.

On shorter hair go ahead and use a smaller curling iron that would give you a tighter curl.  Quickly put the iron down and pull out the curl to give it a more of a beach wave look.
